Directions for multiplying:

  1. Pretend the decimals do not exist and multiply the two numbers
  2. Count the total number of decimal places in the problem
  3. Place the decimal in the answer such that the answer has the same number of decimal places as the problem

Multiplying with the Lattice Method

Example 1: (3.48)(2.6) =

Multiplying the Typical Way

Example 3: 3.14 x 7.6 =

  • Begin by counting the number of decimal places in the problem. There are three decimal places: 1, 4, and 6.
  • Now multiply the numbers as if they were whole numbers, while ignoring the decimals.
